Bar Anchor M Ranch: Cowboys & Carnivores

Meet Maggie,(left) determined, resourceful, strong, and the heart of the Bar Anchor M. Pictured here at age 84 with the rest of the cowboys, husband Mac and daughter Alison. These aren’t your average ranch hands; they’re the backbone of a legacy built on hard work and, you guessed it, plenty of protein.

This post chronicles Maggie’s unwavering commitment to a meat-centric lifestyle, a choice that has fueled her resilience. She’s faced down adversity with the same tenacity she uses to wrangle an ornery cow.

Witness how a community united by a shared passion for primal eating, guided by the formidable Dr. Chaffee, turned a potential disaster into a roaring success. It’s a story that proves sometimes, the best solutions are the most delicious ones.

Forget kale smoothies and rabbit food! This is the saga of Maggie, a woman who’s been a carnivore most of her life. She’s wrestled with life’s challenges, much like wrangling a stubborn steer, and emerged victorious.

After a total crop failure in 2022 wiped out the barley, along came drought in 2023 that destroyed the region’s hay crop. It was a tough rodeo folks, a real nail-biter. What little feed was available was priced like gold. Cattle prices were tanking as many ranchers frantically reduced their herds to survive the coming winter with minimal feed stocks.

The Bar Anchor M was no different. But herd reduction and streamlining still were not enough. This smaller herd still needed nearly 1000 large bales of hay and 5000 bushels of barley to carry them through the bitter Alberta winter.

Compounding everything were increased taxes, the so-called carbon tax on everything, and rising interest costs. Both had been steadily taking sorely needed cash out of the ranch.

It looked grim. The thought of packing it in lay heavy day and night on the entire family, especially Maggie who had poured her entire life into holding on to this ranch.

And then over the hill came the carnivore cavalry in full charge led by their good friends Dr. Anthony Chaffee of YouTube fame @anthonychaffeemd, and his fiancee Elle Marie @pure_ella_hair.

Unbeknownst to anyone at the ranch he had reached out to the entire global carnivore community and help began immediately to pour in.
Needless to say, many days saw these hard nosed ranch hands with tears of gratitude streaming down their wind chaffed faces.

Once the darkness of failure had begun to give way to the dawn of survival, another bright light shone down on the ranch.
Scott and Amy Hay of Waikikahai Ranch @sellbefdirect, reached out offering to mentor the crew toward becoming a beef retailer, selling our own beef in bulk direct to consumers rather than shipping young cattle to auction.
As Mac put it, “It didn’t take a financial genius to see the benefit of cutting out all those middlemen between us and the consumer.”  “We could earn more for our cattle, and our customers could pay less for higher quality beef. And our customers would know where their food comes from and how it was raised.”

“The changes we learned from Amy required a pretty steep learning curve, but she patiently guided us up that mountain and once the top was reached, and changes implemented, the impact was immediate.” recalls Mac.

Today, the Bar Anchor M Ranch through Maggie’s Meats delivers home grown pasture raised Alberta beef to customers in many communities within Alberta, from Fort McMurray in the north to Highway 3 in the south. Almost all of these customers are pursuing a carnivore lifestyle and have specific nutritional goals which the ranch meets in how the cattle are fed and cared for.

In ranching and farming the future is never sure. But, the crew at the Bar Anchor M Ranch continue to cowboy onward with the same grit and determination of past generations that built the legacy of cattle ranching. And nowadays they are not alone. They are surrounded by a community of like minded meat lovers dedicated to feeding their families the best food they can from farmers and ranchers they know and trust.
