Some environmental activists have been busily trying to convince society and those who govern us that ruminant animals such as cows are destroying our soil, our climate, and our environment generally. Oh really? My, my that’s an impressive agenda they have. In my opinion this is really not about saving the planet at all. Its about forcing people to abandon simple healthy whole foods and force us to eat processed and ultra processed foods made from grains, insects, and lab-grown protein. But, let’s not rely on opinion. Let’s take an honest look at the impact. Let’s start in the soil. What does the research reveal about the impact ruminants are having on the land.
Ruminant animals, such as cattle, sheep, and goats, have been a part of the globe’s prairie ecosystems for thousands of years. They are classed as ruminants because they all have multiple stomachs, one of which contains vast numbers of microbes that can break down, through fermentation, otherwise indigestible grasses, legumes and other plants into easily assimilated nutrients and minerals. We humans do not possess such a digestive system and thus cannot properly digest plants. We can however readily digest meat and fats from ruminants who can. Ruminants continue to play a crucial role in shaping prairie landscapes, just as they did in shaping the massive Great Plains area of North America that provided healthy graze for hundreds of millions of roaming bison, antelope, elk, and deer herds, and the peoples who were fed by them.
